Hello mama. At this point in your pregnancy, I know you are probably feeling really tired. You’ve got aches and pains and you’re just longing to have that beautiful bundle in your arms! The last few days or weeks of waiting can be the hardest! I know it was for me! I had to fill my days with something. I would have gone crazy otherwise!

Knowing this, I like to encourage new mamas to take the last few weeks or days of their pregnancy to get organised for baby, to pamper themselves and to really savour their pregnancy. Doing this makes time fly by faster and you’ll create special memories in the process!


Be organised

First, get your hospital bag ready to go and in the car. You never know when you may need to head to the hospital!

Here are some helpful (and fun!) things to add to your hospital bag:

  • Pack your ID, pregnancy book and a birth plan (if you have one)
  • Positive Birthing Affirmations
  • Mobile phone and don’t forget the charger!
  • A couple favourite loose-fitting nightgowns/tracksuit pants (so you don’t have to wear the gaping hospital ones!), socks and slippers
  • Maternity Pads (the big ones)
  • Music (iPod or mp3 player) or some light reading
  • Favourite nourishing snacks
  • Camera for filming/taking photos (charged and with extra batteries and photo space!)
  • Comfortable nursing bras, nursing pads, gel discs, lansinoh nipple cream
  • Maternity underwear – you want those big granny types
  • Toiletries (toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm, some lovely body wash etc.)
  • A notebook and pen for writing down thoughts, helpful tips, etc.
  • Baby wipes and nappies- usually newborn size will fit
  • Burp cloth – I love ones with the terry towel backing, so much thicker!
  • Love to dream swaddle (makes it so much easier then wrapping up baby in the blanket).
  • And finally…going home clothes for you and your baby!

There are lots of other things you can include in your bag—but the important thing is to pack the essentials and items that will make you feel more comfortable to enjoy your hospital stay!

Second, prepare your home for your darling’s arrival.

Have the baby clothes cleaned and put away ready to go for when you come home from the hospital. It’s such a relief to not have to worry about where things are or have to put things away!

Plan what you’ll eat when you come home with your baby. Having nourishing foods around when you’re recovering from pregnancy/birth and breastfeeding is so helpful during the postpartum period. Your body has been through a lot these past nine months!

Here are some quick tips to get food ready for when baby comes home:

  • Organise online food shopping in advance through services like Coles or Woolworths
  • Pre-order food boxes through Marley Spoon, Hello Fresh, etc.
  • Use services like Youfoodz to order pre-prepared meals
  • Organise a food roster with friends and family. Pick a good friend to coordinate this for you. Here are some easy sites to use: Meal Train and Food Tidings.  Every few days postpartum they’ll bring around a nourishing and warm cooked meal for you and your family!
  • Don’t forget freezer meals! They’re such a lifesaver! Homemade pies, casseroles, curries, soup—there’s really no limit to the possibilities. Here’s a great article by The Organized Housewife on preparing freezer meals.

And last but not least…make sure you install the baby’s car seat! You can even get it installed professional. Check out this article for more information on how and where you can get seats installed and checked in Brisbane.


Get pampered

Schedule a pregnancy massage, spa pedicure or go get your hair done. It’s always nice to get some of these relaxing things done when you’re not feeling so wonderful. They can make all the difference in your mood!


Switch off from social media

Social media has its positives and negatives and the last few weeks of pregnancy is one of the worst times to be online. People will constantly message you asking for updates on when the baby will be born or if the baby’s here. There’s nothing worse than having lots of well-intentioned people asking you about something you’re already impatiently waiting for. Do yourself a favour and turn off social media and just relax and enjoy this time. If you’re getting too many calls or texts, turn your phone off too.


Focus on being happy and relaxed

Do whatever brings you peace and joy during these last few weeks. You may enjoy activities like:

  • Swimming
  • Meditating
  • Luxurious baths
  • Relaxing in the garden
  • Reading a book
  • Watching a movie/tv series on Netflix or Stan
  • Seeing some friends or catching up with family
  • Having a girls’ night out or a date night with your partner

Sometimes even doing nothing at all is relaxing! Do what makes you happy and makes you excited for baby to come.


Make a date for your Guess Date

There’s nothing worse than counting down those last few hours or days of pregnancy. Even with all the prior preparations and pampering, they can feel like forever!

Plan a day or night out with your other half go see a movie, go out for dinner or go get a couple’s massage. Sitting around at home on your due date will only lead to you feeling bad if baby doesn’t come when you expect them. Your baby knows when it’s coming and if all else fails and baby comes sooner or later—don’t stress. You are and are going to be a wonderful mum!
